KERN Geo

kern-geo.com

Well data you can trust, audited on the workstation where it lives.

KERN Geo builds a sovereign desktop tool for the quality control of well logs and core data, and provides independent petrophysical audits and training to subsurface teams, from operators to data owners. No cloud, no installation, no data leaving the building.

Synthetic well, generated in the page. The viewer is the same rendering approach as KERN Desktop QC: curves come from the core as typed arrays, every pixel is drawn here.

One practice, three ways to work with it.

The tool, the audits and the training share the same rules of evidence: a dataset is only as good as what can be checked, and every deduction is shown to the person signing the report.

KERN Desktop QC

Software for auditing well data, offline

A single executable that is copied onto a Windows workstation and runs without installation or administrator rights. It ingests LAS 2.0 batches, including malformed files, inventories the dataset, flags gaps, spikes, unit and depth-reference inconsistencies, and exports a QC report. Petrophysics, crossplots, zonation and a 1D synthetic seismogram sit on top of the audited data.

  • —Typed depth references: MD, TVD and TVDSS cannot be mixed by mistake
  • —No null sentinel inside the core; −999.25 becomes NaN at read time
  • —Nothing is cleaned silently: issues are reported, never corrected behind the user
  • —Project saved as one SQLite file the user can copy or email
Subsurface consulting & audits

Independent petrophysical review

Audit of well datasets at the moments that matter: before an acquisition, at the handover of end-of-well deliverables, ahead of a reserves review or a database migration. Completeness, coherence of log runs, core-log integration, interpretations that carry financial weight. The deliverable is a report a manager can read and a specialist can verify line by line.

  • —Data room and end-of-well deliverable audits
  • —Second-opinion petrophysics: Vsh, porosity, saturation, net pay
  • —Data governance and archival strategy for corporate well databases
Technical training

Capacity building for subsurface teams

Hands-on sessions for engineers and technicians who receive, archive and interpret well data. Built around real files, real failure cases and the tool itself, so that what is learned in the room is applied the next morning.

  • —Reading and validating LAS, deviation and core files
  • —Log analysis fundamentals through applied petrophysics
  • —Python for petrophysics, for teams that want to automate their own checks

A malformed file is a finding, not a crash.

Operator deliverables are rarely clean: duplicated curve mnemonics, a header that declares twelve curves over eleven columns, depths that step backwards, nulls written three different ways. KERN reads what it can, reports what it cannot, and keeps the original untouched.

Error messages are written for a geologist, not for a developer.

kern — import

Built for the constraints of a real workstation.

The architecture decisions below are fixed. They are what make a sovereign, auditable tool possible on machines with no internet, no admin rights and no tolerance for unexplained software.

PlatformWindows 10 / 11 x64
InstallationCopy a folder. No installer, no registry entry, no admin rights
NetworkNone. No network code in the application
Native dependenciesZero C/C++ libraries, no DLLs to ship; bundled SQLite only
Deliverable size< 30 MB
Startup< 2 s
Interface languagesFrench and English, switchable
Cargo workspace — every crate below is pure Rust and knows nothing about the UI
kern-core · domain model, typed units and depths
kern-io · LAS 2.0, core CSV/Excel, deviation readers
kern-qc · quality rules, verdicts, report
kern-petro · Vsh, porosity, Sw, net pay, 1D synthetic
kern-geo · CRS, trajectories, well geometry
kern-project · single-file SQLite persistence
kern-template · well view templates and track placement
kern-color · palettes and lithology colour tables
kern-surface · 2D gridding: IDW, minimum curvature, kriging
kern-seismic · SEG-Y engine, reserved for a later release
The core returns data, never pixels

Curves, statistics and verdicts cross the boundary. Rendering lives in the UI, so the viewer can be replaced without touching the science.

No panic, no unwrap

Every fallible path returns a typed error. A corrupt file produces a finding in the report, not a closed window.

Computed never overwrites imported

A derived curve is stored beside its source with its parameters. The audit trail stays intact for the next reviewer.
